You can copy the game files under Steamapps to a separate folder, and then drag them back in when you have re-installed the Client. You might have to redownload a few extra files, but I've found that this works for me.
Also, worth noting is that you can copy the files of a non-Steam game you have on disc(that is also on Steam like Crysis 1) (but you also own on Steam) into the Steamapps folder and it will work.

Point lookout gave lever action rifles, a better version of the hunting rifle using the much easier to find 10mm ammo.
Operation Anchorage gave the winter t-51b, the best armor in the game that also is indestructable.
zeta gave powerful energy weapons and like 2K ammo for slow? weapons.
